The short answer: across the task ratings, the consistently low-exposure work has three properties. It happens in physical space, somebody is accountable for it by name, or it happens between people in real time with something at stake. None of the three is difficulty. Every occupation is a mix of these and their opposites, and the mix is the score.
Start with how big the floor is
Eloundou, Manning, Mishkin and Rock (Science, 2024) report that, once complementary software is assumed on top of the model, about 46% of occupations could have more than half their tasks exposed. Turn that around: even on the generous assumption, more than half of occupations have most of their week below that line. On the bare-model assumption the exposed share drops to under 2%.
So the floor is not a niche. For a majority of workers it is where most of the hours already are. Knowing what it is made of tells you what to protect and what to move toward.
Property one: it happens in physical space
Somebody has to be in the room, the plant, the house, the operating theatre. A system that reads and writes has no hands. Installing, examining, repairing, transporting, caring for a body: the ratings put these near the floor not because they are simple but because the task is located somewhere, and the model is not.
Property two: somebody is accountable
Not "somebody checks it." Somebody signs it, and if it is wrong a licence or a liability lands on a named person. Audit opinions, clinical notes, engineering stamps, court filings. In that work the accountability is the product, which is why an identical-looking document produced another way carries none of the value. The signature is the thing being bought.
Property three: it happens between people, live, with stakes
Negotiating. Delivering bad news. Getting a reluctant person to commit to a date. Reading a room and changing course inside the same conversation. These tasks have no fixed input and no fixed output; the work is the interaction itself, and the interaction only counts because a person is in it.
Every occupation is a mix of these three and their opposites. The mix is the score. A radiologist and a paralegal hold different proportions of the same three properties, which is why their numbers differ and why neither number tells you what happens to the occupation.
What the floor is not
It is not "hard jobs." Summarising four hundred pages of deposition is harder than filing the pleading, and the summary rates high while the filing rates low. It is not "jobs that need a degree," since exposure rises with wages and credentials cluster on the exposed side. It is not "creative work" either; drafting and design rate high because they produce a first version from a brief, which is exactly what models are built to do.
The floor is defined by where the task happens, who answers for it, and whether a live person is the point. Those are structural properties of the work, and they are the ones that have held up across every release of the ratings.
Using the floor to decide where your hours go
If you are deciding where to put your time, this list is a more honest starting point than any ranking of job titles. Take your own week and mark each task with any of the three properties it has. The marked hours are your floor. The unmarked hours are where the technology can already reach.
Then ask which of the marked tasks you could take on more of. In most roles there are some: the client call a colleague currently handles, the site visit, the review and sign-off step rather than the preparation. Moving hours toward them guarantees nothing, but it is the reallocation the ratings most clearly support, and where the hours go is the whole question.
One caution I want on the record: the three properties are a pattern I see in the ratings, not a tested finding. I am not aware of a study that uses them to predict employment outcomes. Treat them as a heuristic with a clear basis, labelled as such.
