AI Can Draft the Paralegal's Documents, Not File the Pleadings

The short answer: AI already rates high on the paralegal tasks that are text transformations, drafting, research, summarising, organising files, and near the floor on the tasks that are acts in the world, meeting clients, filing with the court, managing witnesses, running the office. Whether AI replaces a given paralegal depends on which column holds more of their week.

The high end of the list

The O*NET entry for paralegals and legal assistants lists around two dozen tasks. Rated against the Science exposure rubric, which asks whether a language model or software built on one could halve the time without losing quality, these sit at the top:

  • Prepare affidavits, legal correspondence, and other documents
  • Gather and analyse research data such as statutes, decisions, legal articles, and codes
  • Summarise depositions, interrogatories, and testimony
  • Organise and maintain documents in a filing system

Each of these takes text in and produces text out. A first draft of an affidavit from a fact pattern, a summary of four hundred pages of deposition, a research memo on a statute: these are the tasks current models handle at a level that plausibly halves the time, with a person checking the result.

The low end of the same list

  • Meet with clients to discuss the details of a case
  • File pleadings with the court clerk
  • Call upon witnesses to testify at a hearing
  • Direct and coordinate law office activity

Look at what separates the columns, because difficulty does not. Reading four hundred pages of deposition and pulling out the contradictions is harder than filing a pleading. What separates them is whether the task is a text transformation or an act in the world: a physical appearance, a person managed, a filing someone is accountable for.

The line runs between transforming text and acting in the world. It does not run between easy and hard, or junior and senior.

Why two paralegals get different scores

One paralegal works document review and legal research at a litigation firm. Most of their hours are in the first column. Another runs a small firm's calendar, client intake, and court filings. Most of their hours are in the second. Same job title, same O*NET code, and not remotely the same week.

A ranked list of occupations hands both of them the same number. A task-weighted score does not. If the first paralegal reports thirty hours a week on drafting, research, and summaries, their score sits high. If the second reports thirty hours on client meetings, filings, and office coordination, their score sits low. Neither number is a forecast; both describe a real week.

What this does not tell you

Exposure is a property of the task. Adoption is a property of the firm. Plenty of law offices have not bought anything, and in many jurisdictions a filing still carries a named person's responsibility regardless of who drafted it. Client trust is also not on the task list, and it is frequently the reason a particular paralegal is employed. So a high score on the first column is a description of where the technology can already reach, not a prediction that the role ends.

What it does tell you is where the hours are likely to change first. A paralegal whose week is mostly in the first column has a clear reason to move some of it toward the second: client contact, court process, supervision of the work the tools produce. That shift is available now, and it is easier to make before the firm makes it for you.
