Will AI replace Calibration Technologists and Technicians?
A task-level look at what AI can already do in this line of work, and what is likely to change next.
What AI can do now
Moderate exposureCalibration technologists face moderate exposure to current AI. Tools can now assist with planning test sequences based on equipment specs, drafting calibration reports, and analyzing test data to spot defects or determine requirements. The hands-on work of actually calibrating instruments, maintaining measurement devices, and physically disassembling equipment remains outside AI's reach.
The next few years
Exposure is moderate today and likely to grow in planning and documentation. AI will handle more of the upfront design of test protocols and the writing of routine reports, but the physical calibration work and troubleshooting of real hardware will stay in human hands for the foreseeable future.
