Severe exposureComputer numerically controlled tool programmers face severe exposure to current AI. The occupation's core work, planning machine operation sequences and selecting cutting tools, writing controller programs and storing them on media, and determining reference points and computing toolpaths, is highly automatable by today's generative and optimization AI. Even observing trial runs and conducting simulations to verify programs meet specifications can now be assisted or replaced by AI-driven validation tools.
What's coming
Exposure is already severe and will deepen as AI systems grow more capable at end-to-end CAM workflows. Generative design and automated toolpath optimization are moving from assistance to autonomy, shrinking the programmer's decision space. The role is shifting toward exception handling, machine tending, and quality oversight rather than manual code authoring.
