Minimal exposureEmbalmers currently face minimal exposure to AI. The core work is physical, regulated, and requires manual skill: incising tissue, applying cosmetics, suturing incisions, and handling remains with care. The one task AI might assist with is maintaining records of valuables or clothing delivered with the deceased, where digital systems could streamline documentation.
The next few years
Exposure remains minimal and is unlikely to grow significantly in the near term. Embalming is governed by health codes and legal standards that require human accountability, and the tactile, sensitive nature of the work does not lend itself to automation. Administrative record-keeping may become more digital, but the hands-on preparation of the deceased will stay firmly in human hands.
