Will AI replace Engineering Teachers, Postsecondary?
How much of this job can AI already do, and where it's heading.
Today
Moderate exposureEngineering teachers at colleges and universities face moderate exposure to current AI. Tools can now draft syllabi, generate homework assignments and handouts, track attendance and grades, and compile reading lists. These administrative and content-creation tasks are increasingly handled by language models and automation, though instructors still review and approve the output.
What's coming
Exposure is moderate today and will likely grow as AI becomes better at producing discipline-specific materials and assessments. The shift will be toward professors spending less time on routine prep and record-keeping, and more on pedagogy, research direction, and student interaction. The role is being reshaped rather than eliminated.
