Minimal exposureFarmworkers and laborers in crop, nursery, and greenhouse settings face minimal exposure to current AI. The technology can assist with logging crop information, such as pesticide use or plant growth records, and may help identify pests or diseases from images. The vast majority of the work, planting, harvesting, transplanting, regulating irrigation, and physically tending plants, remains hands-on and outside AI's capabilities.
What's coming
Exposure is minimal today and will remain low for the foreseeable future. AI may gradually take on more record-keeping and basic diagnostic support, but the physical, outdoor, and adaptive nature of farm labor keeps most tasks firmly in human hands. Automation in agriculture is advancing slowly and unevenly, with robots and sensors still far from replacing the judgment and dexterity required in nurseries and greenhouses.
