Will AI replace Switchboard Operators, Including Answering Service?
How much of this job can AI already do, and where it's heading.
Today
Significant exposureSwitchboard operators face significant exposure to current AI. Systems can now handle call routing and switching, take and transcribe messages with clarity suggestions, and relay information across communication channels. Much of the traditional switchboard work, operating phone systems and paging people, is already automated in many settings.
Where it's heading
Exposure is significant now and will deepen as voice AI and automated routing improve. The role is shifting from operating equipment to handling exceptions, security tasks, and physical duties that machines cannot perform remotely. Headcount pressure is real, though some operators will remain for facilities that need a human presence at the desk.
